London Sunday League team gains 2,500 Facebook fans in Argentina!

Enjoyed this story first shown in The Metro this morning and I wanted to share it with you.  It ‘s a great example that you dont have to be a huge club like an Arsenal, Man Utd or Barcelona to find Social Media a successful platform.

“They may only compete in the Southern Sunday League Division Three but the club are a huge hit in Buenos Aires where they have 2,500 supporters.  Fans in South America use their Facebook page to discuss tactics, team selection and congratulate the team after they win.

Almost all messages are posted in Spanish and according to Facebook ‘likes’, Huracan is the 70th best-supported team in England.  Yesterday, the club were crowned champions after a 4-0 victory and the news was greeted with joy in Argentina.

Player manager Henry May established the club after returning from a spell living in Buenos Aires in 2009, when he became a fan of top Argentinian team Club Atletico Huracan.  He said things started ‘getting crazy’ last August when the London club got a ‘shout out’ on a club radio show in Argentina.

‘Within three or four days we had hundreds of Facebook fans. From there things just grew and grew.’

Henry, a 24-year-old teacher from Brixton, south London, said their popularity was boosted yet further when their shirt was seen on TV when it was given away as a prize.  Now the £30 strip has become a ‘must have’ item for its foreign fans.  Huracan FC London are sponsored by Teach First and also have a link with Ensena por Argentina, a similar organisation in Argentina.”

Follow the team at www.facebook.com/Huracanfc and see them in action in the video below:
